What to know about Hockey (part 1)

Hockey is a sport in which two teams compete with each other by trying to control a ball or a round, hard disk into the other team’s net or goal with a hockey stick.

Hockey history

Games with curved heads and balls can be found in many cultures. The hurling game dates back to 1272 BC in Ireland, while a sculpture from 600 BC in ancient Greece, where the game is called kerētízein or kerhtízein (κερητίζειν) because it uses horns or sticks shaped like a figure horns to play (kéras, κέρας). In Inner Mongolia, the Daur people have been playing beikou, a game similar to grass hockey for more than 1,000 years.

Evidence of medieval hockey-like games is found in legal documents related to sports and games. The Galway law, adopted in Ireland in 1527, banned all types of ball games, including the use of hook-shaped sticks.

Until the 19th century, the types and divisions of different games began to separate and integrate into sports as they are today. Organizations were created for the purpose of legislating rules and regulations, while international and national associations were created to organize competitions. Ice hockey was also born during this time as a game derived from grass hockey to adapt to the freezing weather in Canada and the northern United States.

Bandy

People play bandy with a ball on an ice rink, usually outdoors the size of a football field (bandy pitch) with many of the same rules as football. Bandy is a professional sport in Russia and Sweden and is considered a national sport in Russia. This sport is accredited by the IOC; The governing body is the International Bandy Federation (FIB).

Bandy originated in England in the 19th century, originally known as hockey on the ice and was popularized to European countries around 1900.
